How ChatGPT Saved Me ₹1,000 — and More Importantly, My Time

For the last few weeks, I had a frustrating problem at home.

Our Samsung front-load washing machine wasn’t washing clothes properly. Sometimes detergent foam would remain on the clothes. Other times the water wouldn’t drain completely. The rinse and spin cycles were inconsistent, and I often had to manually spin the clothes and dry them in the sun.

The machine is almost 10 years old and no longer under warranty.

My first thought was simple:

“Let me call Samsung service.”

But then I paused.

A service visit would probably cost at least ₹1,000, and there was a good chance the issue might be something minor.

The problem was that I’m not an appliance repair expert. I didn’t know where to start.

So I did something different.

I asked ChatGPT.

I described the symptoms in detail and asked it to help me troubleshoot the issue.

It suggested several possible causes:

• Too much detergent
• Clogged detergent drawer
• Low water pressure
• Partially closed water valve
• Water inlet filter blockage
• Drain filter blockage
• Overloading the machine
• Eco Bubble or rinse system issues

After reading through the list, two possibilities stood out to me:

  1. Water inlet filter blockage
  2. Drain filter blockage – I wanted to try this out first.

I asked ChatGPT to guide me step by step.

It explained how to safely open the drain filter compartment and even warned me that water might spill out when opening it.

That warning turned out to be exactly right.

I placed a vessel underneath, drained the water, and found a surprising amount of dirt, lint, sand, and hair debris inside the filter.

After cleaning everything thoroughly, I noticed something else partially blocking the drain area.

I wasn’t sure whether it was supposed to be there or not.

So I went back to ChatGPT again.

I described what I was seeing, and it guided me through a few checks before advising me not to forcefully remove anything unless it was clearly foreign material.

I followed the instructions, cleaned what I could, reassembled everything, and ran another wash cycle.

The result?

The machine worked perfectly.

No detergent residue.
No drainage issues.
Rinse and spin cycles were back to normal.

And just like that, I saved ₹1,000.

But the bigger lesson isn’t about the money.

In fact, the real savings were in time.

If I had called a service technician, I would probably have waited a couple of days for an appointment. Until then, I would have continued washing clothes manually, spending extra time and effort on a problem that turned out to be fairly simple.

Within an hour, I was able to understand the problem, troubleshoot it, clean the filter, and get the machine working again.

A few years ago, I would have immediately called a technician.

Today, I have access to an AI assistant that can help me diagnose problems, explain concepts, guide me through troubleshooting, and give me the confidence to try solving things myself.

Of course, there are limits. I wouldn’t use AI to repair electrical systems or attempt anything unsafe.

But for many everyday problems, AI can act like a patient teacher standing right beside you.

The future of AI isn’t just about writing content, generating images, or helping at work.

It’s also about solving small, practical problems in our daily lives.

This time, ChatGPT didn’t just save me ₹1,000.

It saved me time, effort, and a few days of frustration.

Before calling a service provider, replacing a device, or giving up on a problem, try asking an AI assistant first.

You might save some money.

You will definitely learn something new.

And sometimes, you may even discover that the solution was already within reach.

Have you ever used ChatGPT or another AI tool to solve a real-world problem and save money or time?

I’d love to hear your story.
